The built environment can have a direct impact on human and ecological health. The unique floating infrastructure and floodplain agriculture such as camu-camu provided by the floodplain communities traps aquatic vegetation which in turn create rich habitat islands that provide food for humans and animals and cleans the water for the whole city.  The floating logs also create mobility and safety challenges especially for children, the elderly and the disabled.

Future city and regional planning should consider interrelated human and ecological services.

Physical Safety

We found that perceptions about physical safety were overall better in Claverito and Belén than Nuevo Belén. Even though Nuevo Belén is a terra firme land-based settlement, this community expressed higher concerns about physical risk than the other two communities.
